¤ Guest-stars : Merrilyn Gann (Rose Abbott), Mike Erwin (Colin Hart), Lee Garlington (Brenda Baxworth), Nancy Everhard (Sharon Hart), Michael Flynn (James Hart), Robert Peters (Marty Maxwell) et Ryan Armstrong (Sam Feeney)

At the end of "Pilot", Dr. Brown asks his son how his day went.

DR. BROWN: How was your day?

EPHRAM: It was OK. I found out I'm in love with a girl who's in love with a guy in a coma. But other than that it was pretty standard.

AMY: Ephram Brown, meet Colin Hart.

At the Denver hospital in "Vegetative State", Colin walks forward to his parents and Dr. Brown.

EPHRAM: I bet you thought it would stop with the puking.

In "The Miracle of Everwood", Colin has a baseball bat and is destroying Coach Austin's office. Ephram watches.

DR. BROWN'S VOICE: The thrombus of this type is like a ticking bomb inside of Colin's head.

In "Home", Colin is shooting baskets outside his house. He shoots another hoop as if the outcome of this shot will make his decision for him. It goes in.

In "Home", Colin is meeting with Dr. Brown at the beginning of the episode.

COLIN: Can you promise me that I won't be a vegetable?

DR. BROWN: No.

In "Home", some sort of cream is placed on Colin's head.

COLIN'S VOICE: Can you promise me that I won't lose my mind or my memory?

DR. BROWN: No.

A split screen appears with two scenes from "Home". One is Dr. Brown prepping for the surgery. The other is Dr. Brown's face during their conversation at the beginning of the episode.

DR. BROWN: I want you to count backwards from ten, Colin.

More of the beginning episode scene between Colin and Dr. Brown in "Home".

COLIN: What can you promise me?

Cut back to Colin counting down in "Home".

COLIN: Ten, nine...

Colin and Dr. Brown's somber conversation in "Home".

DR. BROWN: Nothing.

Close on Dr. Brown's feet in "Home" before he reveals the results of the surgery. Dr. Brown enters the waiting area. Amy looks at him. Ephram looks at him.

{END OF SEASON ONE OVERVIEW}

{TEASER}

[Open on a beautiful view with mountains in the background. We're at the community pool in Everwood. It seems like the perfect day. "One Day" by Robbie Williams plays. Kids are playing in the pool. Amy puts a sliced lemon into the rim of a red glass. She's working at the pool. She smiles and walks towards her parents.]

AMY: Here are your drinks.

DR. ABBOTT: Lookie here. Thank you.

[Dr. Abbott takes a drink which is in the yellow glass. Rose puts a lei around her daughter's neck. Dr. Abbott takes the red glass. Then we cut to Edna putting sunscreen on her husband's bald head as he chuckles. They take their drinks from Amy. Irv takes the blue glass and Edna takes the purple glass.]

EDNA: Oh.

[Amy looks up and smiles as we cut to Ephram and Dr. Brown playing ping-pong in summer clothes. They shoot back and forth a few times until Ephram gets one past his dad. They chuckle. Ephram spots Amy and they share a smile. Cut to Delia running around the pool in her bathing suit. She runs into a lifeguard. The lifeguard turns around.]

COLIN: Hey. All right, slow down there, Delia. Remember there's no running by the pool.

[Bright comes down from the ladder. He's a lifeguard too.]

BRIGHT: That's right, little lady. [beat] Unless of course someone is chasing ya.

[Bright and Colin proceed to chase Delia. Amy watches from afar. Marty Maxwell, from "A Thanksgiving Tale" (and a few other episodes), stops the chase. Amy now behind her brother.]

MARTY: Hey, Dumb and Dumber. Do I pay you to lifeguard or have fun?

[Bright tries to butt in but Marty won't hear it.]

MARTY: Save it. Save it. I think a chicken fight is about to happen in the shallow end so get to your posts.

[Marty points to Amy. Far behind her, we can see Ephram playing ping-pong.]

MARTY: And you. The Bahama Mamas only get one umbrella each. What? Do you think I'm made of money?

[Marty, Bright, and Delia have moved off so just Amy and Colin remain.]

COLIN: So, uh, are we still on for tonight?

AMY: Colin, school starts tomorrow at, like, dawn.

COLIN: Oh, come on. Just meet me under the diving board after it closes. The place should clear out by eleven o'clock.

AMY: Hello. Junior year. The most difficult year of my life coming up.

COLIN: Oh, come on, Grover. Look, you're even smarter than you are pretty. You're gonna have a perfect year.

[Edna comes up behind Amy.]

EDNA: Hey, soldier. I'm thinking this Mai Tai has too much Mai and not enough Tai.

AMY: I'll get to it, Grandma.

EDNA: Thanks. And tell that bartender not to pan me out on the rum either.

[Edna moves off as Amy bites her lip watching her grandma go. When Colin speaks, her attention shifts back to him.]

COLIN: So I'll meet you at eleven?

AMY: Eleven o'clock.

[Colin and Amy kiss. As Colin moves off, he speaks.]

COLIN: Don't be late.

[We stay on Amy for a little bit. She smiles. Then we go to Colin. As he walks away, he also fades away. The song ends. We go back to Amy. She has a sad look on her face.]

[Cut to the gym at Peak County High. Amy is sitting down in a black top and a skirt as a kid, hence forth known as County Kid, speaks. Amy looks sad. The bleachers are packed. There are other students on the stage.]

COUNTY KID: [clears his throat] Well, Colin and I weren't, uh, exactly best friends or anything but, uh, he'd say hi to me in the halls and stuff. He was always doing nice things. You know, even if he didn't know you. Like this, uh, one time in freshman year, uh, I forgot to study for Miss Powers' Algebra midterm so, uh, this dude totally let me copy off of him.

[Cut to Sharon and James Hart sitting in the bleachers. They smile. Cut to sad Amy as the County Kid still speaks.]

COUNTY KID: (CONT'D) I always thought it was kinda cool.

[Pan out a wider view of the stage from the front. We see a ton of flowers, a big picture of Colin in a nice suit. Irv starts narrating as the County Kid speaks barely audibly. We cut to various others in the bleachers: Edna with the Abbotts {Dr. Abbott, Rose, and Bright} behind her, Ephram, and Sharon and James Hart. Then to sad Amy who has looked up but then drops the gaze.]

NARRATOR: It's hard to say what happened exactly. For the most part, it depends on who ask. There are as many sides to a story as there are pairs of eyes. It's always been that way. One of those sides must be closer to the truth but we'll never know which one.

[The County Kid has finished and goes to sit down next to Amy. Amy stands up and goes to the podium to speak. A long beat as she gathers her thoughts. While she talks, we pan to Sharon and James Hart. We pan a little over to see Laynie's next to her mom.]

AMY: Tommorrow's closing day at the Everwood pool. And, um, every year Mr. Maccabee throws a luau. And, I never really thought much about it but that's what I just thinking about just now. I was imagining Colin there. I was imagining what he would do. What he would say.

[We hear a door open from the back of the gym. Amy looks up. It is Dr. Brown entering, holding his daughter Delia's hand. Delia's wearing one of her signature baseball caps. Irv's narration starts up again. We cut over to see Nina to the left of Bright and Irv below them. Nina and Irv look to Dr. Brown as Bright remains focused on his sister. Then we go back to Amy.]

NARRATOR: I try even now to look back at that time. To look past the blame and the outrage that made it all so hard to see anything. I try to piece it together.

[We have a few shots of jumping back and forth between Dr. Brown and Amy each looking at the other. We end on Dr. Brown.]

NARRATOR: (CONT'D) What follows is all I know.

{END OF TEASER / OPENING CREDITS [with some live action photos in addition to the paintings that were in the credits in season one. Stephanie Niznik is added.] / COMMERCIAL BREAK}

{ACT ONE}

[Open on a colorful flower. Pan upward to show we're at the cementary and almost everyone present is dressed in black. Irv's narration starts. People start to move off.]

NARRATOR: The funeral for Colin fell on the first warm day of spring. For many who attended, it was the most difficult day they had ever known.

[Fade to Amy, looking really sad. She's crying. She wipes away a tear.]

NARRATOR: (CONT'D) But the day was kind enough to pass.

[Amy kneels down and lays down a flower of the same type that we opened on.]

[Cut to downtown Everwood. Everything looks normal enough.]

NARRATOR: (CONT'D) I'd like to say it took a while for Everwood to return to business as usual but it didn't.

[A kid chucks a snowball (?) at Dr. Abbott's medical practice.]

NARRATOR: (CONT'D) And by the time summer paid us a visit, things even gave the appearance of being normal again.

[Another kid chucks another snowball at the practice. Dr. Abbott sees this kid and several more hit his window. He exits his practice to scold them.

KIDS: There he is. There he is.

[Dr. Abbott's hit with one.]

[Cut to the Everwood pool. Bright is in view as a lifeguard. So are other lifeguards whom Bright is teaching?]

NARRATOR: Bright and Amy went back to their usual summer jobs.

[Cut over to Amy who is putting a big umbrella in its slot at a table.]

NARRATOR: (CONT'D) Ephram joined them, though his duties were a little less glamorous.

[Pan over to Ephram who is checking the pool with a long stick. Perhaps a time lapse and kids are in the pool. Pan up to show Delia having a blast with girls her age. One in particular is named Brittany Clark.]

DELIA: Marco.

OTHER GIRLS: Polo.

[Game continues as Irv continues his narration.]

NARRATOR: (CONT'D) Delia finally made that group of girlfriends so important to a little girl's youth.

[Cut to Mama Joy's. It's also business as usual. That is until Dr. Brown enters and he is shunned upon by the townspeople. People talk about him behind his back. Dr. Brown goes up to pay for his food. Nina, perhaps one of the few people being civil to Dr. Brown, gives it to him.]

NARRATOR: (CONT'D) Andy Brown, on the other hand, suffered the expected scrutiny of a town that didn't care to understand the intricacies of Colin Hart's surgery.

[Dr. Brown goes to exit. We see Dr. Abbott sitting there, not particularly scrutinizing Dr. Brown but not not scrutinizing him either. Nina looks over to watch her friend.]

[Cut to Dr. Brown walking to his office, sort of a slow-mo.]

NARRATOR: All they knew was that they lost the boy that they loved so dearly. And the man that they deemed responsible still walked amongst them.

[Pan over to a flower of the same or similar type we opened on for this act.]

[Cut to the Everwood pool. Dr. Abbott, wearing a hat, sunglasses, and tons of sunscreen in addition to summer clothing, gets out of the car from the driver's side with stuff in his hand. His wife Rose gets out the other side.

DR. ABBOTT: Did I mention that I'd rather be golfing right now?

ROSE: Only about five hundred times, Harold.

[They meet by the trunk of the car and take stuff out.]

DR. ABBOTT: You know, Rose, it is one thing to insist I take Fridays off.

[Dr. Abbott takes off his sunglasses and puts them in his front pocket. He then proceeds to take various pool things out of the truck.]

DR. ABBOTT: (CONT'D) It is another thing entirely to make me spend them here amongst these half-naked, sun-damaged chuckle-heads whose idea of heavy summer reading alternates between In Touch magazine and Hilary Clinton's autobiography, the next copy of which I trip over, I am tossing in the pool. [beat] Did you bring the sunscreen?

ROSE: Yes, I did. Only after your last application, I don't think there's much left.

[Dr. Abbott shakes the bottle and closes the trunk. A woman is standing nearby by with a crying baby in her hands.]

WOMAN: Morning, Dr. Abbott.

DR. ABBOTT: Morning, Mrs. Greeley.

[Mrs. Greeley practically shoves her baby's bottom into Dr. Abbott's face. Personal Note: Hm. I wonder if her husband is the Mr. Greeley Dr. Abbott spoke with in the first episode.]

DR. ABBOTT: Ah, no thank you. I already have two of my own.

MRS. GREELEY: Edwin's diaper rash, I think it's getting worse.

DR. ABBOTT: I just prescribed the ointment yesterday. It does not work overnight.

MRS. GREELEY: I'd feel more comfortable if you could take another look.

DR. ABBOTT: Yes, and I'd feel more comfortable if you could get Edwin's bottom a bit farther away from my nasal area.

ROSE: Harold.

DR. ABBOTT: Let me. [he looks as Edwin cries] Hm. Yeah, he's fine. He's fine, Mrs. Greeley. Just give the ointment a couple more days to work and by the time you get my bill, he shall be all better.

MRS. GREELEY: Your bill?

DR. ABBOTT: Yes, my bill for the medical services you just connived me out of. Have a nice day, Mrs. Greeley.

[Dr. Abbott starts to move off. Mrs. Greeley looks at Rose as if in protest and Dr. Abbott in shock. Rose is ashamed of her husband but her look to Mrs. Greeley tells her that she can't do anything about it. Rose walks off with her husband.]

ROSE: Honestly, Harold, I sometimes think you secretly enjoy being the most despised man in Everwood.

DR. ABBOTT: It's no secret, Rose. Although the last time I checked, that slot had been permanently filled.

[Pan over to show the Browns' SUV being driven by Ephram. Dr. Brown is in the passenger seat. Delia is in the back seat, in her swim gear.]

DELIA: Stop here. Stop here.

[Ephram has stopped after going over a speed bump which gives Dr. Brown a little jolt backwards. Delia starts to get out.]

DR. BROWN: Delia, stay near Brittany and her mom and call me at lunch.

[Delia leaves the car.]

EPHRAM: Well, I guess you're not coming in.

DR. BROWN: I would but, uh, it's a crazy day at the office.

EPHRAM: What, you're actually paying people to show up now?

[Glance over to Dr. Brown who has a weird sort of look on his face I don't know how to describe. But he says nothing. Ephram opens his door to leave.]

EPHRAM: (CONT'D) I thought so.

[Ephram leaves the car.]

[Cut over to people at the pool. Bright is on lifeguard duty. A new lifeguard is a little ways off. "Things We Do For Love" by 10cc is playing.]

NEW LIFEGUARD: Hey, Bright, you want anything from the Snack Shack?

BRIGHT: No thanks. I'm alright.

[Bright resumes keeping watch on the pool. Suddenly we hear a girl (Brittany) call for help from the deep end and Bright goes to rescue her after the sixth help, I believe. As he does so, we see Delia and her other girlfriends (number of them: 6) watching.]

BRITTANY: Help, help, help me, help me, help me, help me, help, help.

BRIGHT: You OK, Brittany?

BRITTANY: I don't mean to go in the deep end. I'm sorry.

DELIA: [quietly to her friends] I don't know. I don't know.

BRIGHT: OK. Just be careful from now on, OK?

[Bright kisses Brittany on her forehead and then gets out of the pool. She's positively glowing and then goes back to Delia and the other girls.]

DELIA: Oh my gosh, he KISSED you!

BRITTANY: I told you it would work.

DELIA: Is it my turn now?

[Brittany taps her waterproof watch.]

BRITTANY: We have to wait thirteen minutes and then I'll decide who goes next.

DELIA: Why do you get to decide?

BRITTANY: Because I'm the one that made up the game.

[Brittany gives Delia a look like "Don't mess with me. I'm the boss." She then turns away from the girls and then they all admire Bright from afar who is getting water out of his ear.]

[Cut to Amy clearing a table. Ephram's nearby, picking up towels. Now "California Girls" by The Beach Boys is playing. Amy's is in a daydream and Ephram looks a little concerned for her. Marty Maxwell comes up to Amy.]

MARTY: Amy. Amy. Amy.

[Amy snaps out of the daydream and faces Marty.]

MARTY: The Mawlors just told me they've been waiting for their colossal burgers for over 25 minutes. Did you put the order through to the kitchen?

AMY: Oh, um--

[Ephram steps up to save Amy.]

EPHRAM: The kitchen is backed up right now. So there's some sort of problem...

MARTY: Who are you again and why are you so pale?

EPHRAM: Ephram Brown, towel boy. [whistle blows] Yeah, um, I was born with unusually fair skin. In fact, this is me tan.

[Amy smiles at Ephram's attempt of a rescue.]

MARTY: What happened in the kitchen?

EPHRAM: I don't know. The grill... it caught fire or something.

MARTY: It's a grill. It's made to be on fire.

EPHRAM: That's a good point. Do you want me to check it out?

MARTY: No, never mind. I'll do that myself. You stay in the sun.

[Marty rushes off. Amy continues clearing tables.]

AMY: Sorry, Ephram. I guess I must have just spaced there for a second.

EPHRAM: No problem. Making that Brandon Maccabee run around makes up for the mahatony of my day. Not that I don't enjoy retrieving the wet towels from off the ground.

[Amy looks through the orders she has.]

AMY: Shoot. Where did I put the Mawlors' order?

[Amy looks around some more. Ephram looks through some to. Amy looks up to see a sort-of distraught Sharon Hart coming down the big set of steps. Ephram gives Amy the order which he found. Amy has a sort of blank look on her face. Sharon points to some place as if she wants Amy to meet her there.]

AMY: Um, can you run this, send this to the kitchen for me?

EPHRAM: Yeah, sure. Sure.

AMY: Thanks.

[Ephram looks after Amy. We follow Amy as she goes to Sharon Hart.]

SHARON: Can I talk to you for a minute?

AMY: Yeah, sure.

SHARON: I'm sorry to bother you. It's just that the school called yesterday and with the kids coming back next week, they want to organize a memorial for Colin.

[A pause before Amy replies.]

AMY: That's a good idea, don't you think?

SHARON: I don't know. [beat] They want a few of his things like his jersey and I haven't even through his room yet. I-I can't possibly organize this and I can't ask Laynie 'cause she's just getting back settled in and...

AMY: I'll take care of it.

SHARON: You will?

AMY: Absolutely. I'll handle the whole thing. You don't have to worry.

SHARON: [like Amy's a savior] Thank you.

[Sharon hugs Amy.]

SHARON: Oh, thank you.

[Sharon walks off. Amy left just standing there, possibly wondering what she just got herself into.]

[Cut to Dr. Brown's office. His feet are on his desk. No patients present. He sighs, reading something. Edna opens the door.]

EDNA: It's lunchtime, Sarge. Irv and I thought we'd get a few cob salads over at MJ's. Wanna join us?

DR. BROWN: No thanks. I've got some leftovers I was just about to dig into.

EDNA: Well, since the schedule's light today, we'd thought maybe we'd catch T3 over at the cinaplex afterwards.

[Dr. Brown closes his book/magazine and takes his feet off his desk.]

DR. BROWN: Haven't you seen that already?

EDNA: Oh, the first six times don't count. I was still learning all the lines.

DR. BROWN: OK. But don't make a habit of it. I know we're not packing them in these days but there's still plenty that needs to be done around here.

EDNA: Sure thing, Your Crabbiness. Now am I relieved?

DR. BROWN: Yes. You're relieved.

[Dr. Brown gets up as Edna closes the door. Dr. Brown goes to his leftovers in one of the examination rooms. He knocks over a glass. As it falls, we go into a flashback mode where it is part of the surgery. Please note that I may be confusing the anethesiologist and Nurse #2 as they are both women. I just took a guess on who is who.]

ANETHESIOLOGIST: BP is 70 over 40. Blood pressure stabilizing.

DR. BROWN: Here we go. Field is clear. How much blood have we lost?

NURSE #2: Close to 500 cc's.

DR. BROWN: Half a liter? How long has he been on bypass?

BYPASS TECHNICIAN: 3 hours and 20 minutes.

ASSISTING SURGEON: Andy, wait. There's new blood in the field.

DR. BROWN: It's the vein. It's leaking again. It's no good.

ANETHESIOLOGIST: Blood pressure is still stable.

ASSISTING SURGEON: Prepare to harvest a new vein.

DR. BROWN: Wait. That will take three hours minimum. It puts us over six on bypass. That's too long. Prepare to close.

ASSISTING SURGEON: Andy, he won't make it. If the vein's no long, he'll bleed out--

DR. BROWN: I said, prepare to close.

[Assisting Surgeon doesn't question Dr. Brown's word anymore. They prepare to close. Fade out of the flashback mode and Dr. Brown picks up the pieces of broken glass in his office.]

{END OF ACT ONE / COMMERCIAL BREAK}

{ACT TWO}

[Open in the Brown kitchen. Dr. Brown's lost in his own little world, making coffee. We hear a knock but he doesn't register it. The person comes in and knocks again on the table. We see it's Nina.]

NINA: Knock, knock.

[Dr. Brown snaps out of it.]

DR. BROWN: Oh, hey. I didn't even hear you come in.

NINA: Yeah. I'm sleathy that way. Is Delia ready? Sam's waiting in the car.

DR. BROWN: [calling] Delia! Nina's here.

[Dr. Brown walks toward Nina with his coffee.]

NINA: So guess what? I made reservations at Brenda's new restaurant tonight.

DR. BROWN: Oh, I heard about this. Some kinda Hollywood theme place.

NINA: Planet California. And I had to call a whole six hours in advance to get a table.

DR. BROWN: Well, for Everwood, that's pretty hip.

NINA: Yeah. So are you up for it?

DR. BROWN: Oh, thanks, but I don't think so.

NINA: Oh, don't say no...

DR. BROWN: Ah Nina, I'm not, uh...

NINA: Oh, it's just one dinner. And you have to eat, right? And what was the last time you had an Ashton Kutcher hamburger?

DR. BROWN: Who is that? Some kind of sauce?

[Delia has rushed in, wearing her swim gear. Nina rolls her eyes at her friend.]

DELIA: I'm ready!

[Delia hands Nina sunscreen and then turns her attention to her dad. Nina looks at the sunscreen.]

DELIA: And don't forget. You have to buy me a sleeping bag. Brittany's slumber party is tonight and we all have to bring our own beds.

DR. BROWN: Right.

[Delia goes to leave but turns around at the last minute to remind her dad of something else.]

DELIA: Oh, and it has to be purple just like Brittany's.

DR. BROWN: Purple sleeping bag. Got it.

[Delia exits to go to Nina's car that has Sam in it.]

NINA: Think about tonight, OK?

DR. BROWN: OK.

[Dr. Brown smiles. Nina goes out to her car. Then Dr. Brown changes his face to a more sad sort-of look.]

[Cut to Amy looking through an album pictures of Colin in her room. She takes out one pic of him and her in an action shot and continues looking. "Come Downstairs & Say Hello" by Guster is in the background. Someone knocks on her door and Amy looks up. It's Laynie, carrying a laptop.]

LAYNIE: Amy? Your dad said you were up here. You busy?

AMY: No, no. I'm just looking through some old stuff. Come in.

[Laynie comes in and goes near Amy's bed. She spots a picture of her brother and Amy in nice attire and then picks it up with her free hand.]

LAYNIE: When was this?

AMY: Oh, that's Freshman Formal. I remember he was so freaked out because he forgot my corsage.

LAYNIE: Oh, that's right. Yeah, he tried to dig up Mrs. Bennett's rose garden to try to make one from stratch.

AMY: It was such a disaster. [beat as they think about the memory] What's that?

[She's talking about the laptop Laynie has in her arm.]

LAYNIE: Oh, yeah, um, Mom thought you could use this.

AMY: [barely heard as Laynie hands it over] Colin's computer.

LAYNIE: Yeah, um, she thought you might want it. I don't know. Maybe there's some stuff on there for the memorial or... I know he did a lot stuff with Photoshop so maybe there's some pictures or some... I don't really know. She just really wanted you to have it.

AMY: Thanks.

[Amy clears her throat a little. A beat.]

AMY: (CONT'D) I should have called you, Laynie.

LAYNIE: It wasn't your decision.

AMY: No. You, you should have been there.

[Laynie sits on Amy's bed.]

LAYNIE: Sometimes I'm really mad about it and sometimes... I am glad I wasn't there. I got a whole extra day to feel normal.

AMY: You know, if you're going help with this memorial...

[Laynie shakes her head no.]

LAYNIE: I have a hard enough time looking past his room. I'm sorry but I can't.

AMY: OK.

[Laynie gets up off Amy's bed.]

LAYNIE: And I should get going. Um, but if you ever wanna hang out or whatever, I'm around now.

AMY: Yeah, cool.

LAYNIE: Thanks for doing this.

[Laynie leaves Amy's room. Amy sits there for a little while. Then she opens up Colin's laptop. For the wallpaper, there is a nice picture of the two of them smiling. Then she closes it and looks really sad, probably fighting back tears.]

[Cut to Dr. Brown absently flipping through the channels on the TV in his living room.]

TV: You are making / and building muscle more effective than ever / [KTML weather] As you can see, we have a low pressure area which has been there for about three days now / [HSN] coffee container which is this big one

[Piano music builds up, overshadows the rest of the TV's voice. Dr. Brown begins remembering the conversation he had with Colin the night before the second surgery. Close up on his face.]

COLIN'S VOICE: When they put me out tomorrow, if I don't wake up the way I'm supposed to, if I'm not me again, I don't wanna be.

[Now we're in full flashback mode and see the actual conversation.]

COLIN: (CONT'D) [stern] Don't bring me back.

[Dr. Brown thinks for a moment. Colin's eyes have started to well up.]

DR. BROWN: Listen, Colin...

COLIN: Please? Just promise me. That you won't keep trying.

[Beat.]

DR. BROWN: I promise.

COLIN: [pulls out an envelope] I, ah, I wrote it down.

[We end the visual flashback but the flashback continues in auditory mode. We have a close-up of Dr. Brown.]

COLIN'S VOICE: (CONT'D) In case.

DR. BROWN'S VOICE: I understand. But everything's gonna be fine. OK?

TV: OK, now...

COLIN'S VOICE: OK.

[Cut to Brittany attempting to teach cat's cradle to Delia at the community pool. We see the Snack Shack in the background. "Oh Girl" by The Chi-Lites is playing in the background.]

BRITTANY: See how I'm doing it?

DELIA: Kind of.

BRITTANY: You have to memorize it the right way.

DELIA: And you have to go slower. [beat] Oh, my dad's getting my sleeping bag today and I told him it had to be purple.

[Brittany glances over to her mom who gives her a look after taking off her sunglasses.]

BRITTANY: I forgot to tell you. You can't come to my slumber party.

DELIA: What? Why not?

BRITTANY: If you sleep over, then your dad would have to drop you off and pick you up and my mom thinks that would be weird and...

DELIA: Why?

BRITTANY: [brutally honest] Nobody likes your dad, Delia.

[Delia looks sad.]

BRITTANY: (CONT'D) [brighter] But don't worry. We can still be pool friends.

[Pan over to show that Ephram was looking on.]

[Cut to Amy looking through stuff on Colin's laptop. The first picture that we see is of all the Harts. The second is of just Colin and Laynie. Then we switch glances so that we see Amy looking. Two more clicks. Someone knocks on Amy's door. It's Dr. Abbott and he opens the door. He looks a little concerned.]

DR. ABBOTT: Amy? Amy, I'm going to grab some ice cream. Do you want to join me?

AMY: Oh, no thanks, Dad.

DR. ABBOTT: Honey, you've been locked in your room all day. Why don't you take a break?

AMY: I can't right now. What time do we have to leave for the restaurant?

DR. ABBOTT: Yeah, I'm not sure. Your mother made reservations for eight, so...

AMY: I'll be ready by then.

[Another click. Dr. Abbott looks like he's going to say something to his daughter but apparently decides not to. He exits, leaving Amy who is still focused on the laptop. She opens an untitled folder. In the folder, there's one file.]

AMY: Doctor Brown?

[She opens the file (what the file reads in its entirety can be found in the file labeled 01dnr.htm in the zip file) and reads it as we hear Colin's voice.]

COLIN'S VOICE: Dear Dr. Brown: I, Colin Hart, being of sound mind, declare that if at any point during surgery I develop an incurable or irreversible condition, I do not want my life prolonged in any way.

[Amy does a click.]

[Cut to Dr. Brown reading a book in the living room. He hears the door open. Delia enters without saying a word.]

DR. BROWN: Hey. How was the pool?

[Delia gives her dad a look and then exits. Ephram also has entered and he now comes into view. Dr. Brown gets up off the couch to talk to him.]

DR. BROWN: [pointing] She alright?

EPHRAM: What do you think?

DR. BROWN: What happened?

EPHRAM: Well, if you had been with us, you'd probably know for yourself.

DR. BROWN: What happened?

EPHRAM: Actually, if you had been with us, she probably wouldn't have had the problem in the first place.

DR. BROWN: Look, I can see that you're angry and we'll deal with that later but tell me what happened to your sister.

EPHRAM: Brittany uninvited Delia to her slumber party tonight.

DR. BROWN: Why? Did they have a fight?

EPHRAM: Don't you see you're doing it again? You're doing the same thing all over again!

DR. BROWN: What are you talking about?

EPHRAM: You're acting like a freak! You hole yourself up in your office all day. You don't come out of the house at night. You realize we haven't been to dinner as a family once all summer?

DR. BROWN: What does that got to do with Delia being uninvited...

EPHRAM: Brittany uninvited her because of you. Because her mom didn't want you in their house.

DR. BROWN: Well, I can't control these people's minds, Ephram. I can't make them like me. What am I supposed to do? Take out an ad in the Pinecone, saying hey, I'm Andy Brown, I'm still a real nice guy and a heck of a surgeon?

EPHRAM: Forget it.

[Ephram moves into the kitchen. Dr. Brown follows, not giving up.]

DR. BROWN: No, no. I'm serious. You're angry with me as though this is my fault. What am I supposed to do?

[Ephram turns around.]

EPHRAM: I want you to stop acting so damn guilty! OK? You didn't kill him, Dad. He died. Colin died. Just like hundreds of other patients you've had in the past. Why is this so different? I mean, you did your best, didn't you? You tried?

DR. BROWN: Of course, I tried.

EPHRAM: Then why can't you let it go? [beat] Why are you doing this to yourself?

[A long beat as piano music builds up.]

DR. BROWN: I don't know.

EPHRAM: Well, you better figure it out. Because the guiltier you act, the more these people are going to convict you. And us.

[Ephram exits and we stay on Dr. Brown's face.]

{END OF ACT TWO / COMMERCIAL BREAK}

{ACT THREE}

[Open on the Do Not Resuscitate letter Colin wrote to Dr. Brown. Pan out to show we're in the living room of the Harts' house. Amy is meeting with James and Sharon, informing them of the letter that Colin wrote to Dr. Brown. James and Sharon are on the sofa. Dr. Abbott is also present. He sits beside Amy who is on the opposite side of the Harts.]

AMY: I'm not sure when he wrote it. It's not dated or anything. I don't even know if he gave it to Dr. Brown but if he did. Don't you see Dr. Brown might not have done everything he could to save Colin because of what's in this letter.

DR. ABBOTT: Calm down, sweetheart. Give them a chance to process this.

AMY: I know it sounds crazy but I really think we should find out from Dr. Brown if he knew.

[James and Sharon look to each other.]

SHARON: He did know, Amy. And so did we.

[Amy shifts her attention to James.]

JAMES: Colin spoke to us about his wishes before he went to see Dr. Brown. The night before the surgery.

[Amy is blindsided by this fact and shakes her head no.]

AMY: No. I, no, I was with him that day. That's the day we all went... He couldn't have.

JAMES: He did, Amy.

DR. ABBOTT: So you-you did know.

[The Harts slightly nod their heads. Amy is processing the information.]

AMY: You came to me. You asked me to plan the memorial. You asked me to go back, find pictures, go through his things, and I did that for you. And you kept this from me.

[A long beat.]

SHARON: I am so sorry.

[Stay on Amy for a while as she slightly nods. Then shift to James. Then to Dr. Abbott.]

DR. ABBOTT: We, we should go.

[Dr. Abbott clears his throat and rises. James rises as well.]

JAMES: You have to understand. We, we thought we did the right thing.

[Beat.]

AMY: Colin's dead. How could that be the right thing for anybody?

[The Abbotts leave, Amy first. Stay on James. He looks to his wife.]

[Cut to Delia on her bed in her room. She's attempting to do Cat's Cradle with a doll. Not much success. Dr. Brown enters.]

DR. BROWN: Whatcha you doing, kiddo?

DELIA: It's called Cat's Cradle. But it doesn't really work with one person.

DR. BROWN: Well, maybe I can play.

[Dr. Brown sits on his daughter's bed.]

DR. BROWN: (CONT'D) Why don't you teach me how?

DELIA: It's OK. It's stupid, anyway.

[Beat. Delia moves the doll aside.]

DR. BROWN: You're mad at me.

DELIA: No, I'm not.

DR. BROWN: Yeah, you are. [beat] But it's OK. I'm mad at me, too.

DELIA: It's not your fault people hate you. I mean, you-you didn't mean to kill Colin.

DR. BROWN: Well, I actually didn't kill Colin, sweetheart.

DELIA: I know. It was an accident.

DR. BROWN: Well, I, I wouldn't put it that way either.

DELIA: So how would you put it?

[Dr. Brown inhales.]

DR. BROWN: Well, it's kind of hard to explain but... As a doctor, there's always the possibility that one of my patients won't survive surgery. It's one of the risks involved. But just because I wasn't able to save Colin doesn't mean that I killed him. Do you understand the difference?

DELIA: Not really.

DR. BROWN: OK. Do you remember... when Gary the hamster got sick back in New York?

DELIA: I made him drink my cold medicine so that it would get better.

DR. BROWN: Right. Because you wanted to help him. But he died anyway.

DELIA: Ephram said hamsters aren't supposed to have people medicine and that I make Gary even sicker.

DR. BROWN: Maybe. But that's not the point. The point is that you tried to help. And you couldn't. It was out of your control. Sometimes no matter what we do, sweetie, hamsters just die.

DELIA: Like with Mom.

DR. BROWN: Yeah. Like with Mom. [beat] Now, I know it's not as cool as a slumber party but Nina has made reservations for all of us at that new restaurant in town. So what do you say? Wanna go?

DELIA: Totally!

[Ephram walks by Delia's room.]

DR. BROWN: Then get your shoes on and let's going.

[Ephram enters his sister's room.]

EPHRAM: Where are we going?

DR. BROWN: We are going to out to dinner tonight.

EPHRAM: Cool. Can I drive?

DR. BROWN: No.

[Dr. Brown exits his daughter's room.]

[Cut to Planet California. It's quite busy. "I Love L.A." by Randy Newman is playing. Many people are there. A waitress brings over food. Brenda Baxworth, in a white summery dress, mills about, making sure people are satisfied. She makes her way to the hostess area because she sees people far off waiting to be checked in.]

BRENDA: OK, no shoving, people. No shoving. This is California, not New York.

[Ephram is waiting. Dr. Brown enters.]

BRENDA: (CONT'D) Dr. Brown.

[She nervously laughs.]

BRENDA: (CONT'D) What an uncomfortable surprise.

DR. BROWN: Table for five, please, Brenda.

[Brenda looking behind her.]

BRENDA: Oh, well. As you can see, Planet California is, is quite booked. Word of mouth travels fast in this town so... Um, if you would like to come back another time. Perhaps in a few weeks, then...

[Nina enters. Delia and Sam are near her.]

NINA: We had a reservation, Brenda. It's under my name.

[Brenda looks down.]

BRENDA: Well, aren't you a tricky little thing?

[Brenda marks the book.]

BRENDA: (CONT'D) OK, right this way.

[Brenda takes a few menus and Nina begins following Brenda. So does Sam and Delia.]

BRENDA: (CONT'D) Please notice the sand. Here you go.

[Dr. Brown looks to his son.]

DR. ABBOTT'S VOICE: Oh, and would you listen to this?

[Cut to the Abbotts sitting at a booth. Rose and Dr. Abbott on one side, Amy and Bright on the other. Dr. Abbott and Bright are looking at the menus. Amy's not in a good mood.]

DR. ABBOTT: (CONT'D) Smoked trout me-saw salad with field greens and Dijon vinaigrette dressing. And look at what Baxworth is charging for this culinary catastrophe.

ROSE: I think it sounds delicious.

DR. ABBOTT: Hollywood cuisine, my foot. Take an ordinary piece of cauliflower, stick it under a blender, title it Purée of Sylvester Stallone, charge five extra bucks for it. It's, it's obscene.

BRIGHT: I'd say the Kelly Ripa salad looks pretty good, Dad. Except for the burnt walnuts. I'll just ask them not to burn my nuts.

ROSE: What are you going to have, Amy?

AMY: I'm not hungry.

ROSE: Well, you have to eat something.

[Amy looks over.]

[Cut to Sam, Nina, Delia, Dr. Brown, and Ephram at their table.]

[Cut back to Amy and her family at the table.]

ROSE: What is it, sweetie?

[Amy gets up.]

DR. ABBOTT: Amy!

[Cut to the Brown/Feeney table. We see Amy come up to the table. Dr. Brown turns around as if he senses her coming.]

DR. BROWN: Amy.

[Ephram looks up from his menu.]

DR. BROWN: What a nice...

AMY: Did you think I wouldn't find out? I'm just curious.

DR. BROWN: Find out about what? I'm not sure I understand.

AMY: I found the letter. Colin didn’t just die. You let him. [beat, raising her voice] You let him die, didn't you?

EPHRAM: Dad, what she talking about?

[Amy shifts her body towards Ephram.]

AMY: Your father, the number one brainsurgeon in the country. [to Dr. Brown] It's such a joke.

[Dr. Brown rises.]

DR. BROWN: Why don't you come by my office, Amy, tomorrow? We can talk about this.

AMY: Well, you know what? I want to know now because I'm sick of everyone lying to me. So why don't you tell me what happened? What did you do?

DR. BROWN: Nothing. There was nothing left that I could do. Nothing that Colin would...

AMY: That wasn't your decision to make.

DR. ABBOTT: Amy. Amy, that's enough. That's enough.

[Dr. Abbott comes up to grab his daughter by the shoulder to calm her down. But she's starting to cry.]

AMY: You were his doctor. You weren't supposed to play it safe. That's why I found you. Because you never gave up.

DR. BROWN: I didn't give up, Amy. I tried.

AMY: You didn't try hard enough, did you? DID YOU?

DR. BROWN: No.

[Amy nods.]

AMY: Thanks a lot.

[Amy sniffles.]

DR. BROWN: You have to understand, Amy. It was such a risk to begin with.

AMY: That's what you said the first time. That's what everyone said but he was fine. And he was perfect. After everything we've been through, where was your faith?

[Amy walks off. Flash on Nina. Flash on Dr. Brown. Then on Dr. Abbott.]

DR. ABBOTT: I'm sorry.

[Flash on Ephram who lowers his head in shame. Then on Dr. Brown who sits down in his chair.]

[Cut to the Brown foyer. The Browns walk through the front door. Dr. Brown first, then Delia, and finally Ephram. Dr. Brown closes the door.]

DR. BROWN: Go put your pajamas, Delia. I'll be up in a minute.

[Delia goes up the stairs.]

DR. BROWN: I guess we know who you're not taking to the prom this year.

[Dr. Brown walks towards the living room. Ephram follows.]

EPHRAM: Are we going to talk about this?

DR. BROWN: Well, not much left to say. I'm pretty sure you heard it all at the restaurant.

EPHRAM: Not from you, I didn't.

[Dr. Brown has his eyes downcast but then he looks up and he and Ephram share a glance.]

DR. BROWN: There was, uh, a point in the surgery.

[Dr. Brown sits in a chair.]

DR. BROWN: (CONT'D) After the vessel burst.

[Ephram sits on the couch.]

DR. BROWN: (CONT'D) Where I could have tried something else. A more complex version of the same procedure. But we would have had to start all over again. [beat] I just kept thinking about that night. He was sitting on that couch right where you are. Pleading with me. Making me promise something I never should have promised. And so, [beat] I just stopped. I stopped trying.

EPHRAM: So he would have lived?

DR. BROWN: Probably. But he wouldn't have been the same boy that you knew. At best, he would have been barely functioning. Both physically and mentally handicapped. Dependent upon those who loved him for everything. At worst, he would have been under breathing apparatus until the Harts themselves were forced to make the same decision I did. [beat] I knew that the only way to keep my promise to him was... to let him go.

[A long beat.]

EPHRAM: So you've been living with this all summer and you haven't told anybody?

DR. BROWN: His wishes were confidential.

EPHRAM: That's a load of crap. I'm your son. You should have told me.

DR. BROWN: Why? So you could blame me too? So you could hate me like the rest of this town? I couldn't take that risk. Not after everything we've been through.

EPHRAM: After everything we've been through? The only risk you took was not being honest with me.

DR. BROWN: Well, now you know, Ephram. And you can decide just like everyone else. Did I kill Colin Hart? Or did I save him?

[Flash to Ephram. Then back to Dr. Brown. Fade out.]

{END OF ACT THREE / COMMERCIAL BREAK}

{ACT FOUR}

[Open at the Abbotts. In the hallway, Bright is trying to do his tie. He's looking at the mirror.]

DR. ABBOTT: Still?

BRIGHT: It's the looping under part that keeps on screwing me up. I told you, just get me a clip-on.

DR. ABBOTT: Here.

[Dr. Abbott works on his son's tie while they talk.]

BRIGHT: How's Amy doing?

DR. ABBOTT: Well, better than she was last night. [beat, he sighs] Let's hope she gets through the service, OK?

[Bright turns around.]

DR. ABBOTT: (CONT'D) What in the world? Were you trying to strangle yourself with Armani?

BRIGHT: I didn't know she felt like that about Dr. Brown. I don't feel like that. I don't blame him for what happened to Colin.

DR. ABBOTT: Nor do I.

BRIGHT: She blames him. She must blame me too. Since it's my, I'm the reason why Colin hurt in the first place.

DR. ABBOTT: You can't keep going there.

BRIGHT: I don't want to. But Amy is...

DR. ABBOTT: Your sister's in a lot of pain. She's looking for someone to take it out on. At the moment, that unfortunate soul is Dr. Brown. That doesn't mean she's right. Now, truth be told, I'd prefer she has these kinds of outbursts. Unfair as they are. Rather than keeping all of her feelings inside. It's the only way she'll ever move on.

BRIGHT: Do you think she can?

DR. ABBOTT: I'm not sure. I certainly hope so. I do know one thing.

BRIGHT: What?

DR. ABBOTT: It doesn't mean she loved him more.

[Dr. Abbott finishes doing his son's tie.]

DR. ABBOTT: There. That's better.

[Bright gives a small nod.]

BRIGHT: Thanks, Dad.

[They hug. Bright goes off. Stay on Dr. Abbott looking after his son.]

[Cut to a mostly black screen. We see Delia and Dr. Brown get out of the SUV.]

DELIA: There sure are a lot of cars here.

[Cut outwards to show we're in a parking lot. Delia's statement is true.]

DR. BROWN: Yeah. Thanks for pointing that out.

[They walk.]

DELIA: Are you going to talk to all these people?

DR. BROWN: I'm going to try.

DELIA: Are you going to tell them the hamster story?

DR. BROWN: Something like that.

[Cut to a red door in Peak County High. Dr. Brown and Delia walk through it. They clasp each other's hands. We hear Amy's voice, repeating some of what she said at the beginning of the episode.]

AMY'S VOICE: That's what I was doing just now. I was...

[Cut to the gym. We see Amy talking.]

AMY: (CONT'D) Imagining Colin there.

[We see Dr. Brown and Delia enter.]

AMY: (CONT'D) I was imagining what he would do and what he would say.

[Mumblings rise. Amy notices Dr. Brown. Go over to Ephram on the bleachers. He looks above him to Nina (who is smiling) and Bright. Back to Amy. A long beat before she speaks.]

AMY: I don't think he'd be too crazy about tonight. He hated school some weeks. He hated school weeks but he loved basketball and Coldplay and Jim Carrey movies. And he loved the month of October because that's when his birthday was.

[Cut over to the Harts. Sharon is to the left of Laynie. She cries some. Pan over to James on Sharon's other side. Amy continues after a sigh.]

AMY: (CONT'D) But most of all, he loved Everwood. A lot of us talk of about moving away from here someday but Colin never did. He wanted to be a part of this place forever. He is now.

[Amy steps away from the podium and sits down. Dr. Brown brings Delia over to sit with Ephram. Ephram rubs his sister's arm. Dr. Brown goes up to the podium. Before he speaks, we pan on the various people: Amy and County Kid; the 3 other Abbotts with Edna below them; Sharon and James Hart; and, finally, Ephram and Delia.]

DR. BROWN'S VOICE: I came here tonight to, um.

[Back to Dr. Brown at the podium.]

DR. BROWN: (CONT'D) share with you my memories of Colin Hart.

[On Amy, she slightly shakes her head. Back to Dr. Brown.]

DR. BROWN: (CONT'D) And to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. For most of you, these are empty words.

[On Sharon and James Hart listening.]

DR. BROWN'S VOICE: (CONT'D) I know. But I offer them nonetheless.

[Back to Dr. Brown.]

DR. BROWN: (CONT'D) As
